Ukrainian air defences have been shooting down Russia’s new Geran-5 jet-powered drones near Kyiv for several consecutive days, according to radio technology expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov.

He said Russia launches the drones from a distance of about 400 kilometres. Ukrainian air defences have so far successfully intercepted them, but Moscow has already established serial production and is likely to increase their use.

The Geran-5’s high speed poses a particular threat. According to the expert, jet-powered interceptor drones being developed by Ukraine to counter new variants of Shahed drones remain largely ineffective against this type of target.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously said Ukraine was accelerating the development of high-speed interceptors and low-cost missiles as Russia expands production of new aerial weapons. Prototypes have already been developed and are currently being refined.
