US President Donald Trump said that every American adult could receive a $5,000 payment if the Republican Party retains its majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm elections in November.

He made the promise during a Republican Party convention in Dallas. Trump called the proposed payments “Trump dividends,” comparing them to profits that companies distribute among their shareholders. According to him, the initiative would depend on the performance of the US economy.

However, the president did not specify where the money would come from or how the payments would be distributed. Reuters estimates that the United States has around 270 million adults, meaning the program could cost approximately $1.35 trillion.

The Associated Press notes that implementing such an initiative would likely require congressional approval. Vice President JD Vance suggested that wealthy Americans might not be eligible for the payments and that tariff revenue could be one source of funding.

The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026. Republicans will seek to retain control of both chambers of Congress.
