US President Donald Trump has called on Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian facilities involved in diesel production.
According to the US president, the attacks are allegedly causing a diesel shortage and harming the global economy.
“Zelenskyy has to do one thing — stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. Let him go after other targets, but not diesel fuel, because he is causing a shortage,” Trump said. He added that he had already discussed the issue with the Ukrainian president.
Trump’s position may have been influenced by his recent phone call with Vladimir Putin. After the conversation, the US president said he had a “great conversation” with the Russian leader and claimed that Putin was ready to reach a peace agreement. However, there is currently no evidence that Putin personally asked Trump to stop Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Ukraine targets Russia’s fuel infrastructure to weaken its military capabilities, reduce the Kremlin’s energy revenues and disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian army.
