Zelensky calls for ‘total pressure’ on Russia after deadly strike on Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the country’s partners to increase pressure on Russia following new strikes on civilian sites in Kyiv on September 28.

One of the sites hit was a building of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences. A major fire broke out after a direct strike on the building.

Footage from the scene showed people trapped by the fire, standing at windows on the upper floors as they waited for help. Some tried to climb out through the windows to escape the flames and smoke.

Rescuers and other emergency services continue to work at the scene. According to Zelensky, one person was killed and six others were injured, including three children.

Later the same day, Russian forces struck a building housing a medical facility in central Kyiv, also causing a fire. A pharmaceutical company and gas stations in the capital were also hit. In Dnipro, a business center was attacked, while businesses, communications infrastructure and other civilian sites were struck in other cities and regions.

“Every Russian terrorist attack means victims who could have been prevented if the pressure on Russia had finally become total,” Zelensky said.

The president called for stronger measures against everything that finances and supports the production of Russian weapons, as well as against those involved in their use.

“The world must understand that terrorists will go further if they are not stopped here, in Ukraine,” Zelensky said. He called on Europe, the United States and other partners to respond by increasing pressure on Russia and strengthening support for Ukraine’s defense.
