Alexander Lukashenko said he had reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Gazprom’s participation in the construction of a new nitrogen fertilizer plant in Belarus. He also proposed involving the United States in the project.
According to Lukashenko, a site for the future plant has already been selected and the necessary engineering infrastructure is in place. He suggested that the US could provide its technology, while Gazprom and Belarus would be the other participants in the project.
“We should make an offer to the Americans. They need fertilizers, including nitrogen fertilizers, so why not build it together?” Lukashenko said, describing potential cooperation between the US, Belarus and the Russian company.
If Washington is not interested in the proposal, Minsk plans to proceed with the project together with Gazprom and sell the fertilizers produced at the plant on international markets, according to Lukashenko.
The initiative comes amid increased contacts between Minsk and Washington. On September 21, US President Donald Trump said work was underway on a deal to purchase Belarusian potash fertilizers. Lukashenko later said that substantial volumes had already been contracted and that Belarus did not have enough uncommitted potash available for major additional supplies to the US.
