As Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine, the world looks away — Ukrainian singer Polyakova

Ukrainian singer Olya Polyakova has warned that Russian attacks on Ukraine have intensified significantly in recent weeks, while a shortage of air defense systems has made the situation even more dangerous. At the same time, she said, international attention to the war has noticeably declined.

The singer made the remarks in an interview with BBC News Ukraine.

“It wasn’t like this before, especially over the past month. It’s absolutely horrifying. And we don’t have enough weapons to shoot down these drones. Every day, children’s facilities and educational institutions are being hit. Businesses and warehouses are being bombed,” Polyakova said.

The singer believes Russia is deliberately trying to destroy Ukraine’s infrastructure and make life increasingly unbearable for civilians.

“Now they simply want to destroy us. They want to destroy our infrastructure to make life even harder for Ukrainians. And I’m scared. I want something to change,” she stressed.

Polyakova expressed particular frustration over the declining international coverage of the war in Ukraine. According to her, people abroad frequently ask whether the war is even still going on.

“When the situation was less severe, people abroad were talking about it. But now things are much worse, and nobody is talking about it. We’ve disappeared from the front pages. We’ve disappeared from the news agenda. Why? I don’t understand,” the singer said.

Polyakova called for renewed international attention to Russia’s attacks and emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need for additional air defense capabilities.

“We need to shout to the entire world about what’s happening here and how much we’re suffering right now because we don’t have the means to shoot down these drones. We need to find them somewhere. We need someone to provide them. And, of course, the world must support us,” Polyakova concluded.
