Restrictions on Starlink satellite communications imposed by Elon Musk’s company have had tragic consequences for the Ukrainian military. According to Yurii Syrotiuk, chief sergeant of the Unmanned Systems Battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 5th Separate Assault Brigade, the partial loss of access to the technology disrupted combat operations and resulted in the deaths of fellow soldiers.
Syrotiuk made the remarks during an appearance on Ukrainian journalist Natalia Moseichuk’s YouTube channel, commenting on Starlink speed restrictions in Ukraine.
He confirmed that the restoration of satellite connectivity is already having a partial impact on the battlefield. Syrotiuk emphasized that Starlink has become a critical component of Ukraine’s defense, supporting not only communications but also drone operations, logistics, and strikes against Russian forces.
According to Syrotiuk, the restrictions affected Ukraine’s ability to deploy strike drones and allowed Russian troops to move closer to the front line.

“The loss of this technology, even partially, led to the deaths of our brothers-in-arms. Over the past few weeks, we have been burying them because some of our allies decided to play games with us by restricting Starlink,” the soldier said.
At the same time, Syrotiuk stressed that Ukraine’s reliance on American technology does not mean its military would stop resisting if access were cut off.
“Without Starlink, things will be difficult for us, but we have no intention of surrendering. No one will abandon the front line,” he emphasized.
He added that Ukrainian forces are already testing alternative communication systems, although they are not yet capable of fully replacing Starlink’s capabilities.
The controversy surrounding Starlink intensified after Elon Musk accused Ukrainian forces of violating the satellite system’s terms of service. According to Musk, the restrictions were introduced because Starlink was being used for offensive drone operations.
Ukrainian military radio technology expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov rejected those accusations. He explained that since the winter of 2026, Starlink terminals operating over Ukrainian territory, including Russian-occupied areas, have been subject to movement-speed limits of 70–90 km/h (43–56 mph), while the system does not operate over Russian territory at all.
According to Beskrestnov, these technical restrictions make it impossible for Ukrainian forces to use commercial Starlink terminals to conduct long-range drone strikes against targets inside Russia.
