U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said that achieving peace would require Ukraine and Russia to make difficult decisions and compromises. He made the remarks during a speech at the United Nations.

Waltz referred to U.S. President Donald Trump’s address to the UN General Assembly, during which the American president called for an end to the bloodshed.

“What’s important is what you did not hear him say. He did not say one side has to win, another side has to win. It’s not about winning. All sides are losing. All sides are losing, colleagues. The world is losing,” Waltz said.

According to Waltz, Ukraine and Russia can still engage in talks. The U.S. diplomat also addressed the return of children to their families, saying that cooperation on this issue could pave the way for more difficult negotiations on ending the war.

“If Russia and Ukraine can work to reunite children with their families, then they can sit across the table and begin the much harder work of ending this conflict,” he said.

Waltz stressed that achieving peace would require compromises from all sides.

“Peace will require difficult choices from all sides. It will require compromise. It will require leaders to recognize that another 25,000 lives, just by the time we talk about this again, is just completely unacceptable,” the U.S. ambassador said.

He added that President Trump and the U.S. government are doing their part and that Washington hopes Russia and Ukraine will do theirs.

“Please, colleagues, let’s stop the killing and let’s make way for peace,” Waltz concluded.
