Moscow has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s statement urging Ukrainians to elect a new leader to replace Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Kremlin described the American president’s remarks as “historic” and “significant.”
The comments came from Kirill Dmitriev, a special representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“President Trump has joined the many people who believe that Ukraine needs leadership that genuinely seeks peace rather than fueling the war, as Zelenskyy is doing. It is time for Ukraine to elect a new president. Significant and historic,” Dmitriev declared.
Earlier, Donald Trump sharply criticized Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claiming that the Ukrainian president had numerous opportunities to end the war but had failed to take advantage of them.
The US president also accused Zelenskyy of creating problems for the global economy through Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Trump went further by explicitly calling for a change in Ukraine’s leadership, arguing that a new president could negotiate an agreement to end the war.
These statements came amid growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington following Trump’s agreement with Putin on Russian diesel fuel supplies and the easing of US sanctions.
Zelenskyy criticized the decision, warning that revenues from Russian petroleum exports would help Moscow continue its war against Ukraine.
