Large-scale youth protests are taking place across Germany against the policies of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government. Thousands of Generation Z demonstrators have taken to the streets in several cities, demanding a lower cost of living, increased education funding, and an end to plans to reintroduce compulsory military service.
The largest demonstration took place in Berlin, where around 5,000 people gathered near the Brandenburg Gate. Approximately 3,000 protesters rallied in Stuttgart, more than 2,000 in Hamburg, and around 1,900 in Erfurt.
Participants in youth movements, including Gen Z regelt and Gen Z hat genug! (“Gen Z has had enough!”), oppose rising military spending and are calling on the government to pay greater attention to social issues and climate protection.
In Hanover, demonstrators called for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to resign.
In some cities, protesters erected barricades, lit flares, and set off firecrackers.
Some demonstrators appeared in Halloween costumes, while others carried flags of the former East Germany (GDR) and communist symbols.
Fearing possible unrest, owners of some stores in major cities boarded up their shop windows with wooden panels as a precaution.
