The political conflict surrounding Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal has drawn a response from Russia. Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused the Kremlin of interfering through a network of online bots, while Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev responded with a sarcastic statement.
According to Tusk, Russian bots are actively supporting political forces that he believes are seeking to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Poland.
The prime minister accused the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, President Karol Nawrocki and former President Andrzej Duda of undermining judicial independence.
“Let’s call things by their names. For years, there have been organizations and politicians in Poland who want to destroy democracy and the rule of law,” Tusk said.
He argued that these forces have found support among pro-Russian groups and are now benefiting from what he described as a Russian army of online bots. Tusk also referred to public praise from one of the Kremlin’s leading propagandists.
Medvedev: “We are coming!”
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev responded to the Polish prime minister’s accusations by mocking claims of Russian involvement in Poland’s political crisis.
“I love this mantra! Elections in the United States? It’s the Russians. Migrants in Spain? It’s the Russians! A constitutional coup in Poland? Of course, it’s the Russians!” Medvedev wrote.
He ended his post with the words: “Thank you! Nothing unites us better than our power! And you know the rest… We are coming!”
What is happening in Poland?
The escalating political confrontation is linked to a struggle for control of the Constitutional Tribunal.
President Karol Nawrocki arrived at the court building in Warsaw amid protests and heightened security measures. A verbal confrontation broke out between presidential representatives and people inside the building.
The dispute over the tribunal has become another stage in the political confrontation between Donald Tusk’s government and President Nawrocki’s political camp.
