The International and European Federations of Journalists have condemned Russia’s attack on the newsroom of the We Are Ukraine and We Are Ukraine+ television channels, which injured six media workers.
European Federation of Journalists General Secretary Ricardo Gutiérrez said the strike was not an isolated incident. According to him, the attack was part of a deliberate series of Russian strikes on Ukraine’s media infrastructure.
International Federation of Journalists General Secretary Anthony Bellanger stressed that Russia had once again violated international law protecting journalists during wartime.
“Striking a newsroom while journalists are broadcasting live is a serious attack on press freedom and the public’s right to access information. We stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian colleagues and call for full accountability for this attack,” Bellanger said.
On September 8, a Russian kamikaze drone struck the building housing the We Are Ukraine and We Are Ukraine+ television channels. Their newsrooms were heavily damaged, and six journalists were injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strike as an attack on the media and urged the world to respond to Russian terror.
