Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh has won gold at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
In the womenโs high jump final, the 24-year-old Ukrainian cleared 1.99 metres. Mahuchikh achieved the winning height on her second attempt and was the only competitor to clear it.
Australiaโs Nicola Olyslagers claimed silver with 1.95 metres. Australian Eleanor Patterson and Serbiaโs Angelina Topiฤ shared bronze after both cleared 1.91 metres on their first attempts. Another Ukrainian, Iryna Herashchenko, finished fifth with the same result.
Having already secured victory, Mahuchikh raised the bar to 2.04 metres but failed to clear the height.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is a new competition bringing together Olympic champions, world and Diamond League winners, and the seasonโs top-performing athletes. The inaugural event is being held in Budapest from September 11 to 13 and features 381 athletes representing 65 countries. The championship is scheduled to take place every two years.
The event has a total prize fund of $10 million โ the largest in track and field history. Mahuchikh will receive $150,000 for her historic victory.
