“Absolutely immoral”: Merz outraged by Schröder’s birthday visit to Putin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has strongly condemned a trip by his predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, to Moscow, where the former chancellor joined Russian President Vladimir Putin for his 74th birthday celebrations.

Merz’s deep outrage was conveyed by German government deputy spokesperson Steffen Meyer, according to ntv.

Officials in Berlin emphasized that Putin bears responsibility for the war against Ukraine and that his orders continue to claim numerous lives every day.

Against this backdrop, the former German chancellor’s friendly visit to the Russian leader sparked sharp criticism and was described as immoral.

Earlier, the Kremlin announced that Putin had celebrated his 74th birthday in the company of Gerhard Schröder. Russian officials also released a photograph showing the two politicians together.
