Hollywood actors Sean Penn and Adrien Brody will star in the new political thriller “Snake Island,” directed by Doug Liman, known for The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow.
Filming is already underway in Croatia. Parts of central Zagreb have been transformed to resemble wartime Ukraine, with barricades, sandbags, military vehicles, and actors wearing Ukrainian military uniforms.
The film is reportedly inspired by the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The story follows a covert group of Ukrainian divers undertaking a dangerous underwater mission amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The circumstances surrounding the Nord Stream explosions remain under investigation, meaning the film presents a fictionalized interpretation of the events.
Filming in Croatia is expected to last 19 days, with production moving from Zagreb to the Croatian coast and concluding in Pula in early September. A release date has not yet been announced.
Both actors have publicly supported Ukraine. Sean Penn has visited the country several times since Russia’s full-scale invasion, met with Ukrainian soldiers and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and made a documentary about the war. Adrien Brody has also publicly expressed solidarity with Ukrainians.
