Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems used by Ukrainian forces have returned to normal operation following earlier speed restrictions. According to him, the restoration process began overnight on October 24, and by morning, Ukraine’s military had regained access to the speeds needed for combat operations. This is particularly important for frontline logistics and countering Russian jet-powered drones.
The Ukrainian leader made the announcement in his evening address on October 24.
“The most important news today is that Starlink and Starshield have been restored to the speeds we had before all these restrictions. We now have the speeds we need,” Zelensky said.
The president explained that the restoration process began during the night. By morning, satellite connection speeds had reached levels sufficient for Ukrainian troops to use the systems effectively.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian officials did not simply rely on reports that the systems had been restored but conducted their own checks.
“This morning, I received a report from Ukraine’s Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara. We carried out checks: Starlink and Starshield are working,” the president confirmed.
The restoration of satellite communications is particularly significant for Ukraine’s Defense Forces, as Starlink is used to maintain communication between military units, transmit operational information, and support battlefield logistics.
Under combat conditions, the stability of these connections directly affects how quickly information can be exchanged and military operations coordinated. Speed restrictions can create additional challenges for units that depend on satellite communications.
Zelensky also emphasized the importance of Starlink and Starshield for protecting Ukrainian airspace.
“This is extremely important. It is significant for our frontline logistics and for protecting Ukraine against jet-powered Shahed drones,” the president stressed.
The restoration of the systems’ previous speeds is therefore important not only for maintaining battlefield communications but also for supporting Ukraine’s defensive capabilities amid continuing Russian aerial attacks.
Zelensky also indicated that resolving the issue had been made possible through active communication and support from the United States.
He expressed gratitude to everyone who helped Ukraine secure the restoration of normal system operations, particularly those who publicly raised concerns about the restrictions.

“I want to thank everyone who helped us restore Starlink and Starshield, who supported Ukraine’s efforts to communicate this problem and made it possible to return to normal operating conditions,” he said.
The Ukrainian president extended special thanks to American lawmakers, media representatives, the US State Department, and the American president.
“I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this very seriously, extremely seriously, and who are genuinely helping us. I thank the congressmen, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the president. Protecting lives matters,” Zelensky stated.
His remarks suggest that the restrictions on satellite communications had moved beyond a purely technical issue and become a matter of political discussion.
However, the president did not disclose the specific agreements that made it possible to restore the previous speeds, nor did he clarify who ultimately authorized the removal of the restrictions.
It also remains unclear whether Ukraine has received any guarantees that similar restrictions will not be imposed again in the future.
Despite these unanswered questions, Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces can once again use Starlink and Starshield at the restored speeds.
For Ukraine, which continues to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion and relies heavily on stable battlefield communications, the return of these satellite systems to their previous operating speeds represents a significant development, particularly given their role in supporting military operations and defending against aerial threats.
