Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated legendary footballer Andriy Shevchenko on his 50th birthday, thanking him for decades of bringing pride and joy to Ukraine.

Shevchenko, a former AC Milan and Chelsea striker and winner of the 2004 Ballon d’Or, is one of the most celebrated athletes in Ukrainian history. He also captained and later coached Ukraine’s national football team.

Zelensky noted that at 50, it might be appropriate to address him formally as “Andriy Mykolayovych,” but said that for Ukrainians he remains simply “Sheva” — a player and coach who has become a national icon.

“Happy anniversary, legend! Victories to you, our national team and our country, and peace to all of us,” Zelensky wrote.
