A Russian attack drone struck the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv during the day on September 4. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the drone was directed at the office of acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad.
The strike caused part of the building’s floor structure and an exterior wall to collapse, sparking a fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, while emergency services continued working at the scene.
As of 6:00 p.m. Kyiv time, nine people were known to have been injured in the capital’s Shevchenkivskyi district. According to preliminary information from city authorities, the victims were hospitalized with blast injuries, multiple injuries, and shrapnel and laceration wounds. No fatalities were reported.
The blast wave also damaged the nearby Zavertailo café and bakery. One customer was taken to hospital, while the establishment’s employees and guests were sheltering in the basement during the attack.
The Consistory building of the Sophia of Kyiv National Reserve was also damaged, with windows shattered and its glass entrance structure destroyed. Zelensky said he spoke with Oleksandr Poklad following the attack.
“Unfortunately, a Russian drone struck the SBU’s central building on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, opposite St. Sophia’s Cathedral. The drone was directed straight at the office of the head of the SBU in that building,” the president said.
Zelensky instructed the SBU chief to prepare a response against Russia.
“I instructed Poklad to respond to the Russians appropriately, tangibly and, if possible, in kind once everything is ready. Our military will support this response,” he stressed.
The attack came amid nearly continuous Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital, which have now continued for ten consecutive days.
