Emergency crews are working to deal with the aftermath of a combined Russian attack on Kyiv, the surrounding region and several other parts of Ukraine overnight into September 8. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian forces used ballistic, cruise and anti-ship missiles, as well as jet-powered drones.
Residential buildings and other civilian facilities in the capital sustained significant damage. Ten people are known to have been injured and are receiving medical assistance. Emergency workers rescued 13 people. At least two people were killed.
Russia targeted critical infrastructure in the Kyiv region and struck a market in the Odesa region. An apartment building was damaged in Kharkiv, leaving two people injured.
In the Sumy region, the locomotive of a Kyiv–Sumy train was struck while at a railway station. No one was injured, and passengers are being evacuated. Attacks were also reported in Zaporizhzhia and the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Ukrainian forces shot down a total of 175 aerial targets. Zelensky said air defenses proved highly effective against cruise missiles, but intercepting ballistic missiles remains a major challenge.
Ukraine continues to discuss the supply of additional interceptors with the United States and its European partners. Meetings are also planned with representatives of governments and companies that could help strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and advance the development of its FREYJA anti-ballistic missile system.
