Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, describing the anniversary as both a tragic day and a day of strong people.
The president recalled that the attacks, carried out 25 years ago, killed nearly 3,000 people from 90 countries, including Ukrainians.
“We honor all the heroes who did everything they could to save the lives of others — police officers, firefighters, and ordinary people who refused to stand aside, including those of Ukrainian descent. We express our respect, honor, and condolences,” Zelenskyy wrote.
He also highlighted NATO’s response, noting that the Alliance invoked Article 5 of the Washington Treaty on collective defense for the first time following the attacks.
According to Zelenskyy, the events of September 11 demonstrated the need for a united and decisive response to terrorism in defense of human rights, freedoms, and democratic values.
“Every enemy and terrorist must face a response if people want to preserve their civilization and their choice to defend rights, freedoms, and values. Because evil must be punished,” the president stressed.
