Russia is taking increasing risks in its war against Ukraine and paying a significant price for limited territorial gains, Axios reports, citing a new assessment by the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS).
In a document released on September 24, Danish intelligence said Russian forces are suffering “heavy losses for marginal territorial gains.” At the same time, Moscow is stepping up hybrid activities against Western countries, including sabotage and cyberattacks.
According to the DDIS assessment, Russia’s behavior is also being influenced by Ukraine’s long-range strikes against critical targets on Russian territory — what President Volodymyr Zelensky has described as “long-range sanctions.”
Danish intelligence also highlighted the state of the Russian economy. The report warns of the risk of a “major crisis,” driven in part by high military spending and the impact of international sanctions.
According to figures cited by Axios, the Russian military has suffered more than one million casualties, including killed and wounded, since the start of the full-scale invasion. During the summer, Russia’s casualty rate was estimated to have exceeded the pace of recruitment.
At the same time, the DDIS expects Moscow to continue putting pressure on Ukraine and its partners. However, Danish intelligence currently sees no indications that Russia is preparing for an imminent invasion of a NATO country.
