Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine overnight on October 7, firing 70 missiles, including a significant number of ballistic missiles, as well as attack drones. Kyiv and 12 regions came under fire, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
According to him, Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was one of the key targets of the Russian attack.
“The Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively. It was one of the most insidious attacks: 70 missiles in total, many of them ballistic, as well as Shahed drones. Unfortunately, only some of them were intercepted,” Zelensky said.
In Pryluky, Chernihiv region, a Russian strike destroyed a five-story residential building. The death toll has risen to nine, including three children. At least 26 people were injured. Search and rescue operations are continuing at the site.
“Today, for Putin’s birthday, the Russian army ‘gifted’ him the destruction of a residential building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region,” Zelensky wrote.
Russian missile strikes also damaged five apartment buildings in Dnipro and four high-rise buildings in Kremenchuk. According to Zelensky, two people were killed and eight others injured.
In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone damaged a high-rise residential building. Two people were killed in Kyiv, while another two were killed in Oleksandriia.
Zelensky stressed that Russian ballistic missiles remain the biggest challenge for Ukraine’s air defenses and called on partners to increase supplies of air defense systems and interceptor missiles.
“Air defense packages are now a vital necessity for us. That is why every day we are searching for missiles for Patriot systems that can and must actually protect people’s lives here, in Ukrainian skies,” Zelensky said.
