Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, has warned that Europe can no longer rely on the United States as a trustworthy partner. Her remarks come in response to US President Donald Trump’s actions, particularly his calls for a change in Ukraine’s leadership.
The European lawmaker stressed that Trump’s demands for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to step down effectively play into the hands of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
“If Trump calls on Zelenskyy to resign, he is clearly siding with a murderer. Only the Ukrainian people determine Ukraine’s leadership through free elections, not the White House and certainly not the Kremlin,” Strack-Zimmermann stated.
She emphasized that Putin should face international justice in The Hague, while Ukrainians suffering from Russian aggression deserve continued support.
The German politician also accused the US president of undermining unity among Western democracies. According to her, by attacking allies and democratic institutions, Trump is weakening the West and damaging democratic values.
Strack-Zimmermann argued that many Americans share these concerns. She urged European countries to remain steadfast in their support for Ukraine, regardless of Washington’s policies.
“Europe must stay firmly on a clear course and support Ukraine, because the United States can no longer be relied upon at present,” the MEP concluded.
