Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as colder weather approaches. Overnight into September 30, Russian forces carried out a large-scale combined attack targeting energy facilities across the country.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi, it was the most extensive attack on the energy system since the end of the previous heating season. A total of 11 regions came under attack.
Russian strikes and ongoing hostilities left some consumers without electricity in Kyiv, as well as in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Energy crews are carrying out emergency repairs wherever the security situation allows.
In Kyiv, electricity has already been restored to around 8,000 households. At the same time, city authorities reported no damage to energy infrastructure within the capital itself, and scheduled power outages are not currently expected.
Ukrainian authorities are also checking backup power systems for critical infrastructure. The Energy Ministry has urged residents, where possible, to shift electricity-intensive activities to between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reduce pressure on the power grid.
Ukraine is entering another cold season as Russia continues its attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
